GSN 1,000: Transformation and trepidation in the Gulf monarchies

GSN celebrates it's 1,000th issue with a special 48-page report that gives perspective to four decades of dramatic change and resilient continuity in the GCC monarchies.

The Gulf states that emerged from the heady days of the early 1970s seem, in many respects, barely recognisable today. Increasingly educated populations cram into futuristic cityscapes and rulers turn to contemporary managerial solutions to reshape and reinforce the social compacts that traditionally underpinned their leadership. In parallel, communal conflicts, military responses and the demands of the millions seeking refuge from the wider MENA region’s crises threaten the monarchs’ brave new world.

 The report includes:

  • An assessment of the pace of political change in each of the Gulf Co-operation Council countries.
  • A Who’s who in the region's media, including a look at the impact of social media.

  • A look at the GCC's defence infrastructure and how they are equipping to deal with a range of potential threats.

  • Profiles of the ruling families of the GCC states (including separate entries for Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al-Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al-Quwain) with family tree graphics showing the inter-family relationships at the heart of business and politics in the region.

  • A Map of the Gulf region's boundaries and hydrocarbons infrastructure.

  • A look back at the role oil and gas resources have played in shaping the region and the more recent rise in interest in low-carbon sources of electricity generation such as renewables and nuclear power.

  • An examination of the economic indicators that chart economies of extreme contrast.

  • Analysis of the GCC states' sovereign wealth funds and their investment portfolios.
