Iraqi protests weaken Abdul-Mahdi’s hold on power
Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi’s government is facing the most serious threat to its position iafter several days of violent unrest in Baghdad and cities across the south. As GSN went to press, more than 100 people had been killed and several thousand injured in clashes between protesters and security forces (and the death toll could be much higher). President Barham Salih has called for calm and Abdul-Mahdi has urged parliamentarians to support his efforts for economic reform.
