Our projects

Recent examples of our consultancy and strategic advisory work include:

  • as part of a report for a major British power company with operations throughout Africa, we made a portion of our Africa Power Projects Database available detailing thermal independent power producers across both northern and sub-Saharan Africa. This initial phase of the project was followed by in-depth country specific reports on target markets and face-to-face advisory meetings. It is continuing with a strategic advisory service to support board level decision making;
  • we have recently worked with one of the world’s three largest solar PV developers on IPP market entry opportunities in Senegal and Cameroon. Our reports, prepared in early 2014 included detailed supply, demand and consumption forecasts for all fuel types as well as detailed analysis of the current state and prospects for the technical and market structures in each country, including transmission, distribution and retail considerations.

    The reports provided qualitative and quantitative descriptions of customer segments in both countries and stakeholder analysis. They also provided projections for future levelised costs of electricity and a comparison of marginal costs for existing and hypothetical future projects, with a particular focus on the impact of domestic gas supplies;

  • for a Western private sector power investor we produced detailed supply and demand analyses on the power sectors of Mali and Guinea. This included a detailed, granular analysis of existing and potential supply (with likelihood of implementation based on our scenario building model), current and expected off-grid demand, CbI-generated growth forecasts and pricing comparisons between the proposed project and existing power plants. In addition to providing for this client a report laying out a base case and best case supply and demand situation, we also provided the dataset with interactive tables and graphs allowing the client to generate any number of theoretical supply and demand scenarios;

  • analysing risk and decision-making in Algeria for an oil major considering its return to the country following a traumatic incident;
  • for a major UK- based power developer we produced an in-depth Nigeria market entry report on the investment climate for IPPs. This report focused strongly on the political and technical prospects for the supply of natural gas for IPPs at different locations and concluded with recommended sites for commercially viable IPPs;
  • for a major oil company we produced a detailed security threat analysis of Nigeria's oil producing Niger Delta region. Based on extensive on-the-ground reporting, we provided a detailed assessment of the threat levels towards employees and infrastructure from kidnap, violence, crime, terrorism and piracy in a number of south-eastern states, Lagos and Abuja, scored according to our 'threat assessment matrix';
  • undertaking extensive studies of opportunities in Saudi Arabia’s upstream and downstream, and carrying out in-depth analysis of how changes in one Gulf government’s leadership might affect its energy policy;
  • reporting on the evolution of Tunisian policy towards shale and other unconventional gas reserves, and fitting that into the context of current and future Tunisian policy;
  • regular monitoring of local politics and drivers of decision-making in several Moroccan cities to support a major investment by a prominent private equity investor;
  • writing comprehensive market entry reports for a prominent FTSE-listed oil company ahead of its taking up acreage in Africa;
  • compiling a market entry report on Cameroon for a potential solar investor;
  • monitoring and analysing upstream gas developments in Mozambique and Tanzania for hedge fund and power sector clients;
  • profiling ten prospective African markets (politics, policy, energy sector issues and competitor analysis) for a major UK-based power developer;
  • for a UK-based corporate with worldwide cement manufacturing operations, CbI conducted a comparative market analysis looking at prospects for the company to operate in eight different jurisdictions in Africa and the Middle East;
  • for a Canadian oil and gas company, we surveyed six different countries, three in Africa, in respect of operating conditions with a specific emphasis on the fiscal regimes in each jurisdiction.
