Yemen: More tensions within GPC

Following rumblings about possible sanctions against those trying to obstruct Yemen’s transition, tensions have again flared between President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the General People’s Congress (GPC) – the party Hadi belongs to, but which is headed by his predecessor Ali Abdullah Saleh.United Nations special envoy Jamal Benomar presented a report to the UN Security Council (UNSC) on 28 January, which warned once again of systematic attempts to sabotage Yemen’s transition. In the days following the closed-door discussions at the UNSC, National Dialogue Conference (NDC) spokeswoman and editor-in-chief of the Yemen Times Nadia Al-Sakkaf said on Twitter that the UNSC was looking to pressure Saleh into relinquishing his post as GPC president, and leaving the party altogether.
